New Substation Civil Works Adjacent to a Live Operating Substation

2024 – CitiPower

Overview

Hansen Yuncken was appointed building contractor for demolition of existing assets and the construction of the new Adeney Private Hospital facility Cotham Road Kew. The new hospital will replace a decommissioned 1970s hospital on the same 209 Cotham Road site, which was demolished in May 2022. TSA was contracted to deliver the broad civil construction services for a new substation, adjacent to the existing substation, which would be decommissioned at a later date.

Scope of Works

Structural civil and building construction for the new substation, including associated trenching, structural foundations, footings work, draining and building and structural building works, installation of the 66 kV HV conduits, craneage and gantry installation and transformer installation. Concrete installation for the basement for the hospital within the reserve areas.

The site perimeter fencing and access tracks were also installed by TSA. We undertook design of the sliding gate system which was required to be compliance with CitiPower standards to the associated risk of working within the HV existing substation area.

Key Civil and Building Construction Activities

  • Geotechnical investigations: structural investigations were undertaken to ensure safe usage of our cranes on site. Crane lifting plans were produced as part of this process.
  • Investigations: Existing asset investigation activities central to validating the best for project location for the utility service installation, identification risks and mitigation strategies, and to enable early engagement for the utility asset owner minimising risk of delays in the overall delivery program.

  • Benching and trenching: Deep trenching including shoring / benching, large pit construction activities, general drainage and bunding.
  • Foundations: Installation of foundations for building, structural footings for the substation. The building construction works included the concrete slab area and building construction. In the reserve area we install the structural concrete slab which was required as part of the new hospital basement. Crane lifting of the base pit.
  • Earthgrid: All earthing works including deepened earth stakes

Complex stakeholder engagement

  • Existing substation and utility services providing safe work challenges. Zero complaints or disruptions to supply.
  • Co-ordination between Hansen Yuncken (building contractor), Delta (demolition contractor), CitiPower (network distribution company) and Essence (The Project Manager/Engineering Consultant). Collaborative co-ordination.
  • Tight timelines for completion, site access and works delivery. Our works were completed on-time, on-budget with zero non-compliances, and zero safety or environmental incidents.
